SEAT members actively support competition flying events; pushing sleek, efficient machines to their limit against other fliers adds another dimension to flying.

In 2003 the Tasmanian State F3B champs were held at St Leonards & we hosted several of the most experienced glider pilots in Australia. Competitors included World Champs campaigners, F3B 2003 competitors National champs winners & the occasional current World Champion in David Hobby. Challenging conditions brought out the best in competitiors & the CD. Gerry Carter got up hotly pursued by John Skinner & David Hobby. Top 3 places were awarded a gong for their fine efforts to weigh down respective mantelpieces.

L to R: John, Gerry & David

Another successful State F3J champs was held at the St. Leonards "B" field (since the "A" field had been ploughed for Oats). A healthy 10kt breeze strengthened to 20 kts around midday & thermals were hard to stay in without drifting towards Hobart. John Skinner had great success using the strategy of flying way downwind over a ploughed field and then slinking home on the time mark. Bruce Nye took second spot with his own design & built "Glitz" and some economical flying while Mike Taylor from Hobart kept them both honest. Steve Boag can lay claim to the most spectacular atomization of a Calypso Cobra in modern memory on the zoom of a winch launch.

Pedal to the metal Steve!

<Awful sight for any glider pilot>

It'll buff out Steve ;0)

Stanley December
Early December is when we fly off the superb Stanley slopes. Some of the most picturesque flying in Tasmania is to be had at Stanley. In the evening members converge at the footy oval to fly electrics until dark.

Members & Associates gather from all over Tasmania and spend 2 days eating, drinking & occasionally flying. 1st weekend in December is the date. Contact SEAT for further details.

The "Nut" at Stanley, NW Tasmania...fly in all directions.

150ft sheer drop produces plentiful lift.

After the winds have gone home the electrics come out to play.
